According to a recent report by the Ministry of State Security, national security staff received a report from someone who called 12339, the National Security Agency's hotline, to report a suspicious foreign tenant.
"I rented my house to a foreigner and noticed that no one moved in to live in the house. However, there is always a room with suspicious green lights." The landlord, Li, said during the call.
The report said that the house is located at a coastal city and although the city lights up at night, Li told the staff that lights coming from a room on that particular house under the moonlight were a little off.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Li said a foreign person who claimed to work for an overseas company rented his house but never moved in. He later noticed that lights coming from one of the houses in the neigborhood was strange and quickly found that it was coming from the house he rented to the foreign tenant.
"When other houses switched off the lights at night, a room in the house would keep shining with a strange green light and it caught my attention." Said Li.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Li had always thought that the tenant was suspicious but said he could not put his fingers on it. At one point he thought that it might involve national security and decided to call the 12339 hotline to report the case.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
National security agencies started an investigation on the community and quickly learned that the houses offer a panoramic view of the coastal scenery, and with the help of professional equipments, one would be able to monitor a naval base stationed across the community from a distance.
The naval base is responsible for several crucial military tasks in China, and there are significant military activities conducted at the base every year. Furthermore, the base has weapons that are key targets of foreign spies and intelligence agencies that are eager to infiltrate and steal China's military secrets.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
The suspicious green lights the landlord discovered were found to be  emitted from surveillance equipments set up by foreign spies and intelligence agencies in the house to steal military secrets.
After a thorough investigation, the national security agencies destroyed the equipments, cracked down on the relevant spy organization operating in the country and eliminated the threat.‍‍‍‍‍‍
Li was also rewarded for the role he played on the successful crackdown and disposal of illegal and criminal activities of the foreign spies he reported.
